American author Jack Kornfield is a Buddhist monk from Burma who studied Buddhism with the Buddha in India, Thailand, Burma. He has been teaching meditation around the globe since 1974, and is one of the most prominent teachers of Buddhist mindfulness. After graduating with a degree of Asian Studies from Dartmouth College he worked for a team of tropical medicine doctors in the Mekong River valley. There he was taught by Ven. Ajahnchah. He is also a father-husband and activist.

In 1975, Kornfield co-founded the Insight Meditation Society, a meditation group based in a former Catholic seminary. Dharma society was the first to practice native mindfulness. He later adapted it to the Western way. He met Sharon Salzberg. They moved to California to establish a meditation center, Spirit Rock. He spent the rest his life teaching mindfulness.

Spirit Rock Center's founding teacher

In an interview conducted with Kamala Tiyavanich of the Inquiring Mind Jack Kornfield described Spirit Rock, his new meditation facility. The Center was born out of his Path of Elders retreat. A new dharma center was inaugurated on Independence Day 1998. Kornfield organized the first residential meditation retreat in this area in 1999. The campus has now grown to include more than 12 buildings.

Later, he founded the Insight Meditation Society, the Spirit Rock Center, in Woodacre (California) and was a world-renowned spiritual instructor.
